Meeting Minutes

Attendees:

  • Dave Cuomo, Peter Hilton, Brian Duffy, Susan Andrews, Carter Yepsen, Gina Smith (by phone), Bryan Berry, Christian Grieco

NYSERDA will issue its "Next generation technology" Program Opportunity Notice (PON) within the next 48 hours. It will be found under funding opportunities on NYSERDA site listed as next generation (product vendors, data centers, or software, technology) - for R&D.

The components of the PON are:
  • Demo site option
  • New technologies
  • Put a link on foreign webiste
  • R&D new solicitation
  • Technologies/techniques
  • Improve end user power use
  • Lightning/HVAC
  • Focus on IT and data center
  • $5 million total is available via cost sharing with NYSERDA (i.e. 50% of funding provided)
  • Last year a data center specific PON was issued but this year it is general.
  • Due dates for responses to PON are 4/28, 6/28, 10/29
  • Listserv is setup. IT Greening committee members who want to be added to Next Generation Technology PON listserv send an email to sta@nyserda.org.
  • Susan reported that NYSERDA is seeing a lot of proposals concerning virtualized desktops. This started a discussion on desktop virtualization:
    • Zen desktop - citrix, VDI - vmware
    • NYSERDA has provided funding support to migrate to virtual desktop. Go to thin client - meter and monitor baseline. After operational - measure - get financial assistance to cover part of capital cost.
    • 50-70 users are rule of thumb of number of users per server
  • Agencies playing with desktop virtualization include:
    • Workers Comp Board, DMV - getting NYSERDA funding for thin client, Corrections
    • And besides Ken, Joe Lynch of Sun/Storage Tek is now on the work group.
    • Sue to ask her team about who to reach out to for call for presenters to discuss VDI
    • Mohawk Paper, in Capital District - won green award. Gina forwarded an article about this before.
    • Looking at early to mid June for Desktop Virtualization Seminar - or a panel discussion
    • Brian will ask around for experts to talk with
    • Gina to get DMV interest in participating in a seminar or panel discussion as 1-2 hour event?
    • Peter has list of conference topic ideas - will forward to group
